Scaling Without Losing the Soul of Your Business

As your company grows, it can feel inevitable to lose small bits and pieces that make up the soul of your business, but this doesn’t have to be the case.

Focal Pointe, based in Caseyville, Illinois, grew more than 200% in three years without sacrificing their culture, values and customer experience that fueled their growth in the first place.

“Not only can you keep the soul of your company as you grow, you can actually enhance it,” says John Munie, founder and president of Focal Pointe.

Munie will cover the day-to-day leadership decisions required to scale a business without sacrificing trust, alignment, employee engagement or the relationships that define a company’s reputation during his session, “Scaling Without Losing the Soul of Your Business” on Monday, Nov. 9 at 11:15 a.m. at ELEVATE.

Munie says this session is a good fit for owners who catch themselves saying, “You can’t find good people anymore – no one listens,” or individuals who are part of the company leadership team and want their brand promise to remain consistent.

Scaling Sustainably

Munie credits the company’s growth first and foremost to their client retention.

“This must come first, otherwise the next two drivers are pointless,” Munie says.

The other two growth drivers are acquisitions and strong sales, as over 50% of Focal Pointe’s new commercial sales come from referrals and from an effective sales team.

“We never go into a transaction figuring out our win first,” Munie says. “We always work to fully understand the other person’s win, then see how our needs can fit into their win.”

Munie admits that in the past they have struggled with losing the soul of the business while growing. He says one of the key changes they made was hiring for alignment of values, rather than resume.

“By hiring talented people who have different strengths than you, yet are bought into your vision; you can overcome your personal weaknesses and limitations that hold your company back,” Munie says.

He adds that full transparency results in greater trust within the organization.

“The team is bought into our vision, mission, purpose, and values at all levels,” Munie says.

Focal Pointe has also been recognized as a USA Today Top Workplace, with employee retention rates where more than half of the team has been with the company for over 10 years.

“Everyone likes to be part of a winning team, especially if they know they were instrumental in building the foundation the rapid growth is being built on,” Munie says.
