Clearing the Way for Those Who Serve: Why SnowCare for Troops Matters

Guest post by Cindy Code, excutive director of Project EverGreen

When winter storms roll in, snow and ice can quickly turn daily routines into major challenges, especially for military families with a loved one deployed. That’s where Project EverGreen’s SnowCare for Troops steps in. The program unites compassionate snow and ice management professionals with military families across the country, providing a helping hand that delivers far more than a cleared driveway; it brings peace of mind, safety, and a sense of community support during a difficult time.

SnowCare for Troops by the Numbers

Each winter, Project EverGreen’s SnowCare for Troops program connects approximately 700 volunteer snow and ice management professionals with around 500 military families across the country in need of assistance. Volunteers provide snow removal services for properties up to one acre or less, helping ensure driveways and sidewalks remain safe and accessible while a loved one is deployed. Property size and service scope are left to the discretion of each volunteer, allowing them to lend a hand in ways that best fit their equipment and schedule.

Common Misconceptions About SnowCare for Troops

One of the biggest misconceptions is that volunteering requires a significant time commitment or that you’ll be responsible for multiple properties all winter long. In reality, most volunteers are matched with just one military family, and you choose how much you can take on. Even clearing a single driveway after a snowstorm can make a huge difference.

Another misunderstanding is that you need to live near a military base to participate. Families are located in communities all across the country, not just near installations, so chances are there’s someone nearby who could use a hand.

And finally, you don’t need a big plow truck or specialized equipment to volunteer. Many participants use their regular snowblowers, shovels, or small plows, whatever tools they already have. What matters most is showing up with a generous heart and a willingness to help.

It’s also important to note that volunteers don’t need to find a family on their own. Project EverGreen’s program managers handle all the matching and oversight, ensuring a smooth and rewarding experience for everyone involved.

SnowCare for Troops isn’t about the size of your fleet; it’s about the size of your impact.

Commitment Made Simple

We keep it simple and flexible. Most volunteers commit to helping one military family for the duration of their loved one’s deployment, usually a few months to a year. You decide how much you can take on, and Project EverGreen’s team will match you with a family in your area. Even clearing one driveway can make a big difference on a snowy morning.

The Impact of Service

It’s hard to put into words just how meaningful this program is. Imagine being a parent holding down the fort while your spouse is deployed and waking up to find your driveway already cleared after a heavy snow. That act of kindness lifts a huge weight both physically and emotionally. Volunteers often hear how much peace of mind their service brings, knowing the family can get to work, school, or appointments safely. It’s community service at its best.

Partnership Matters

For 15 years, BOSS Snowplow has been a steadfast partner of Project EverGreen’s SnowCare for Troops program. When the GreenCare for Troops initiative expanded to include snow and ice removal, BOSS immediately stepped forward to help raise awareness and rally volunteers to serve military families in need.

Their long-standing commitment has helped ensure driveways stay clear and families stay safe during the winter months, providing peace of mind to those with a loved one deployed in service to our country. Through their leadership, resources, and generosity, BOSS has empowered thousands of volunteers to give back to the heroes who protect our freedom.

Why Landscape Companies Should Get Involved

Volunteering for SnowCare for Troops is a powerful way for landscape and snow management companies to live their values. It’s an opportunity to do what you do best, take care of people through your craft. Supporting the program showcases your company’s heart in action and helps your team experience the true impact of service beyond business goals. It’s about helping neighbors, honoring service, and making a tough season a little easier for those who sacrifice so much.

For Commercial Contractors: A Small Effort, Big Reward

Even if your business primarily handles commercial accounts, taking on one residential driveway for a military family can leave a lasting impression. It doesn’t take much extra time, but the gratitude and goodwill you’ll receive will last long after the snow melts. Think of it as giving back to the same community where your team works, shops, and lives; it’s good for the heart and the brand.
