Landscapes of the Month: Turning a Bland Space Into a Masterpiece

In a span of six months, this landscape in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, was transformed into a stunning outdoor living area. The space had been underutilized and largely empty for years, prompting the homeowners to make a change. They called Weller Brothers Landscape Professionals, based in Sioux Falls, to make improvements, leading to a 2024 Gold Award of Excellence.

“Winning the award was a huge honor and represents the culmination of creativity, technical expertise, and teamwork,” says Chad Kasten, senior landscape designer. “It validates the effort put into overcoming challenges and delivering a space that exceeds expectations. Most importantly, it reflects the joy and connection this project brought to the homeowners and their families, which is our ultimate goal.”

As the project began, the top priority was to create a welcoming front entrance and backyard patio. That vision started to evolve as the home’s true potential was recognized.

“When phase one was complete, the owners started to see the bigger picture,” Kasten says. “The grilling area, pergola, and firepit were such a hit that they couldn’t help but imagine what more could be done. They took the plunge — literally — with a pool and a whole new vision for their outdoor space.”

The new vision meant a new challenge for Weller Brothers, starting with the sloped backyard.

“We had to make some big adjustments to the slope, including custom retaining walls and steps to make everything work,” Kasten adds.

The budget also played a role, the team worked with the existing grade to create tiered walls using natural stone. Engineering was not needed since the walls were tiered, allowing the cost to be lower. In the front yard, the existing retaining walls were in rough shape. To help with the budget, the team reused many stones and steps to redo the entrance. They also added new plantings to rejuvenate the front entrance.

Safety was another priority, especially with young kids living in the home.

“The retaining walls were designed with smooth finishes, and we made sure there were clear, easy transitions between levels so the kids could explore without worry,” Kasten says. “We also leveled the upper lawn area for a safe playset spot and added concrete around the pool to prevent slipping.”

Before this project, the backyard had limited seating with a single deck. As the design grew, a series of entertainment areas were added. An outdoor grilling area allows the family to remain with their guests throughout the evening. Additionally, this spot has a fridge, kegerator, and storage drawers. Nearby, a cedar pergola creates a break from the sunlight and provides lighted seating at night. Guests can also sit on a patio that overlooks the pool and has a gas fire pit. And finally, lights were installed in each area, making it easy to navigate the yard while adding to the ambiance.

With so many features, the owners wanted to minimize the maintenance needed, starting with the plant palette.

“We went with a mix of native plants and perennials that were easy to care for but packed a visual punch,” Kasten says. Artificial turf is also used in several areas, like between the pavers.

Various subcontractors were involved with the project, reinforcing the need for clear communication.

“We kept in touch with regular check-ins, shared timelines, and super-clear plans,” Kasten says. “Whenever challenges came up, we tackled them together in meetings. That open communication ensured everyone was working toward the same vision.”

Once the project was done, the family hosted a pool party with their friends, neighbors, and the Weller Brothers team creating a truly satisfying result for everyone.

“What really stood out was the connection we built with the family,” Kasten says. “By the time we finished, it felt like we were creating a space for friends, not just a client. Seeing them enjoy it made all the hard work worth it.”
